What Are PFAS, and Why Are They a Packaging Concern?

PFAS is a broad name for a large group of fluorinated substances. Certain PFAS have been valued for their ability to resist oil, grease, water, and heat. These characteristics made fluorinated treatments attractive for some paper and molded fiber food-packaging applications.

Many PFAS are highly persistent, and some have been associated with health and environmental risks. As a result, regulators and brand owners have placed tighter controls on their use.

A standard protective insert for electronics, for example, generally has no functional reason to contain an oil-resistant treatment. Does All Molded Pulp Packaging Contain PFAS?

Compostable Does Not Automatically Mean Food-Safe—or PFAS-Free

A compostability assessment examines whether a material can break down under defined composting conditions without unacceptable effects. Likewise, recyclable packaging is not automatically compostable, and compostable packaging is not accepted in every collection system. Claims should relate to the complete product and local infrastructure.

Before approving a material, ask for information relevant to the actual project rather than collecting certificates with no connection to the product being purchased.

1. Material Composition

Confirm the fiber type, whether the pulp is virgin or recycled, and whether coatings, films, colorants, wet-strength agents, or barrier additives are used.

2. PFAS Information

If relevant, request a statement regarding intentionally added PFAS and discuss whether laboratory testing is needed. Define the required test method, limit, and reporting threshold with your compliance team or testing laboratory.

3. Food-Contact Documentation

For direct food contact, request reports that match the material, product type, contact conditions, and destination market as closely as possible.

A report for one formulation may not automatically cover a customized product made with a different coating, pigment, or additive package.

4. Restricted-Substance Requirements

Depending on the application and market, buyers may need supporting documentation for restricted substances or brand-specific chemical policies. Share these requirements before sampling or tooling begins.
